If you’re hosting a holiday dinner this year, we hope that everything goes smoothly and that you have a joyful, peaceful gathering. With all of those people in your home, however, it will certainly help to take extra precautions before the holidays begin, in order to prevent a hosting disaster.
Here are 4 of the systems in your home that we think deserve extra attention before you host that big holiday party or dinner.
Sump Pump
The sump pump in your basement or crawlspace helps to keep your home from flooding or suffering from water damage. We don’t want you to have to deal with such a situation during the holiday season, so make sure you test your sump pump regularly.
Clean the drain that leads to the outdoors if there is debris in the opening. Pour buckets of water into the pump, and make sure it drains properly. If not, call in a technician for sump pump repair or replacement.
Heater
At the very least, you should test your heater before the holidays. Make sure everything is running smoothly. And replace the filters every month or two for adequate airflow.
But we also recommend that every homeowner get a heating maintenance appointment from a qualified HVAC technician. A tune-up and cleaning of the system helps it to run smoothly, preventing breakdowns when you need it the most, like during a family party.
Water Filters
You should be replacing your whole-house water filters (if you have them) on a regular schedule (every few months or so). Forgetting to replace filters can result in a lack of water pressure in your home, which can be especially problematic when lots of people are over for Thanksgiving dinner.
Garbage Disposal
Make sure your garbage disposal is working properly, and replace one that’s on its last legs before the holiday season. In addition, do your best to educate the people in your home about how to use the garbage disposal, reminding them it is not a catch-all for all of their trash.
